The First Lady was supposed to speak at a high school graduation, so students started a petition to block her

First Lady Michelle Obama was supposed to speak at this year’s Topeka High School graduation — until a student started a petition to try to block her from speaking.

Says Britain’s Daily Mail (UK -> Topeka -> ???),

‘People think it’s a great opportunity, but it’s the graduates’ time. They are getting that diploma that they worked so hard for,’ [18-year old senior Gifford said. ‘Families are feeling that they are being cheated out of the loved ones special day.’

Abbey Rubottom, 18, a Topeka High senior, described herself as a ‘die-hard Democrat’ but doesn’t like the idea of Obama sharing the stage with graduates.

‘No disrespect for the first lady, and it’s amazing that she wants to come speak, I just think it doesn’t belong at graduation,’ Rubottom said.

Apparently, many of the students are concerned about logistics more than anything — and that because of security and other requirements, tickets would be limited so their families and friends wouldn’t all be allowed in.

But others say that it’s because she would speak about the famous Brown vs. Board of Education decision, “politicizing” the graduation speech.

I don’t know about you, but wouldn’t you like to be able to say “the First Lady of the United States spoke at my high school graduation”? Sure sounds more exciting than the speeches given at mine…

What do you think? Would you like to have the First Lady speak at your high school graduation?
